(NEXSTAR) — When you get cash, whether as change, from an ATM, or as a gift, do you ever think about where it’s been?Americans are using less cash in recent years, according to a 2022 Gallup poll. While much of that was sparked by increasingly digital payment systems and venues going completely cashless, some of it can be attributed to COVID-19 (neither the CDC or the WHO ever advised against using cash to prevent the spread of the virus, but numerous places did away with it — a useless move, a study by BYU found, since the virus wasn’t viable on cash banknotes).Even if plastic has become king, you can still find paper banknotes being passed around. Edward LottermanMany people think that the U.S. economy is in terrible shape – regardless of highly positive numbers for unemployment, growth in jobs and in the value of output of goods and services. Even though consumer prices increased only 3% over the last 12 months, many people will tell you that inflation is the worst it has been in decades. Economists are stumped. However, that may be positive on two counts.First, the current situation may quash economic theories based on the assumption that the general public is not only highly informed about economic conditions, but that collectively, they accurately can foresee what government will do, what the effects of such policies will be and thus how to best protect their own positions as circumstances evolve. That “rational expectations” theory was all the rage in the last 20 years of the 20th century but is increasingly ignored as the world has moved on.More importantly, concern about a bad economy in the form of an inflationary sp...12/3/2023: Rain & mountain snow today

The latest Storm Tracker Forecast from meteorologist Matt Mackie:A big system pushing through will bring mostly rain, as temperatures stay in the low 40's for much of the day. The exception will be in the Adirondacks and Green Mountains, where it could be cold enough to support decent snowfall in the higher terrain. While a coating is possible for many north of Interstate 90, totals of a couple inches or more will be limited to Hamilton and Essex, and northwestern Warren counties, and perhaps highs spots in eastern Bennington County over in Vermont.Things ease up overnight, with only leftover showers on Monday. Tuesday is dry, but still cloudy with seasonable temperatures. A few light snow showers are possible Wednesday with a weak system pushing through.Chilly but a bit brighter for Thursday. After a few more chance showers on Friday, we look ahead to a milder start to next weekend - highs in the mid 40's.Colorado snow totals for December 2-3, 2023

A major bookseller is back in Marin, joining merchants large and small in feeling upbeat about the holiday spending season.A tenant for 17 years, national retailer Barnes & Noble closed its 25,000-square-foot store at Corte Madera Town Center in March. Now the store is back, reopening in a 4,000-square-foot location at the mall with a greater focus on books rather than a range of other media and toys, said store manager Logan Nevens.“We really are back to the basics, so it gives us a chance to cater toward book lovers,” Nevens said. “We are feeling good. We have had consistent people back in since day one.”The Barnes & Noble reopening has signaled an enthusiasm for in-person consumer book sales in an era dominated by online retailers such as Amazon or ThriftBooks, Nevens said.“Being in the mall, it’s a comfort for people. Barnes & Noble is a known name,” Nevens said. “Everyone here has been part of this for as long as they can remember.
