Officials in Peabody are calling for a statewide crackdown on drivers who blow by stopped school buses after a city pilot program examining the problem yielded jaw-dropping results. The city of Peabody started the pilot program in September. Ultimately, the program documented 865 instances of drivers passing stopped buses. “There’s no excuse in my book,” said Maria Scheri, the founder of S.T.O.P the Operator from Passing, at a press conference on Thursday. 7Investigates previously Peabody’s pilot program in which the city teamed up with a company called BusPatrol to install cameras on the outside of 10 public school buses. The cameras start rolling when a car passes a school bus with its stop sign deployed. The cameras operate with the goal of grabbing the license plate of the passing car. While cameras have captured video, police officials this week said they can’t use those videos to issue citations due to privacy laws. Problems with the MBTA’s Green Line Extension are so severe that the agency will need to adjust more than half of the nearly brand-new tracks, officials announced Thursday, a stunning development that reveals construction and oversight failures.MBTA General Manager Phil Eng, who was hired in April by first-year Gov. Maura Healey, announced that an ongoing review determined roughly 50 percent of the Union Square branch and 80 percent of the Medford/Tufts branch will need to be “regauged,” or have the space between the two rails widened. After recent repairs, the tracks are wide enough to safely accommodate full-speed travel, but they are still narrower than the construction standard, officials said.Eng said he only learned the extent of the problems recently, but said that MBTA scans identified some track sections that were too narrow as far back as April 2021 and that his predecessors should have been more “proactive.”“The goal is to make sure now ...Patriots release 2023 NFL Draft pick, freeing up roster spot

By TARA COPP and LOLITA C. BALDOR (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Navy warship on Thursday took out three missiles and several drones that had been fired from Yemen and were heading north, the Pentagon said.Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, told reporters Thursday that the USS Carney, a Navy destroyer in the northern Red Sea, intercepted three land attack cruise missiles and several drones that were launched by Houthi forces in Yemen. He said they were shot down over the water.“We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets in Israel,” Ryder said in a Pentagon briefing. Since news began trickling out about the Red Sox search for a new head of baseball operations, one of the more intriguing names bandied about has been Craig Breslow. The former Red Sox pitcher and current Chicago Cubs assistant general manager and senior vice president of pitching is reportedly among a handful of candidates known to have interviewed for the job, and on Wednesday night Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported that Breslow is in advanced discussions to join Boston’s front office.Whether those discussions ultimately bear fruit remains to be seen, and it’s not clear if Breslow would immediately ascend to the top job or slot in as the No. 2 under a new president of baseball operations. Either way, the 43-year-old Breslow appears to have a real shot. That might seem surprising for some, especially fans who feel like Breslow was pitching out of the Red Sox bullpen just yesterday, but the lefty has always been regarded as one of the most intelligent people in the g...Medway family desperately awaiting Gaza escape route after Biden announces aid deal

A lawyer for a family of American citizens from Medway trapped in Gaza near a crossing with Egypt said they are still desperately awaiting word on whether they can escape the gruesome warzone even as airstrikes pounded buildings Thursday morning near where they were staying.Attorney Sammy Nabulsi, who represents Abood Okal, Wafaa Abuzayda, and their 1-year-old son, Yousef, said the family is stranded near the Rafah Crossing, a border checkpoint in Southern Gaza with Egypt, and is running out of food and water. The family traveled to Gaza for a two-week trip to visit Abuzayda’s parents, Nabulsi said.Airstrikes have hit the area in recent days, Nabulsi said, including one Thursday that struck buildings just over 100 yards from where the family is sheltering. In a message sent on WhatsApp, Okal told Nabulsi that “windows shattered and walls cracked.”“My son was sleeping under a window. (Wafaa) had to snatch him out in fear of glass falling on him,” Okal said in a message sent to Nabuls...Latest news
